The Hamer family visits Darebin Parklands, May 2012
In May 2012 we were honoured to have some very special visitors to the parklands, the family of the late Premier of Victoria, Sir Rupert (Dick) Hamer.
We were thrilled to be able to give Lady April and her daughters Sarah and Julia a tour, and to tell them what a hero to all of us in the parklands and DPA Sir Rupert is. We took the Hamers back to the old rangers' hut, built by the DPA and officially opened by Sir Rupert in 1980. (Mouse over the photos below for more information or click on any of the images for a slide show.)
Sir Rupert, the father of the Garden State, played a pivotal role in the parklands. He supported the creation of a park, even when the site was a weed infested wasteland, and helped gain the equivalent of $1 million in funding to make the wonderful place we enjoy today. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to him, and were glad to be able to thank his family first hand.
