Soyti Chhav, Darebin Council, La Trobe Ward
I know the Parklands very well, and love them. It is a wonderful area of bushland in the heart of suburbia, and should be kept as natural as possible. It is a unique place to leave behind the hustle of the city, a place where you can believe that time has stood still and the dreamtime still reigns.
S’hi D’Amour, La Trobe Ward, Darebin Council
Many people have not only had vision, but heart and application for Darebin Parklands to be what it is today. Deepening and broadening of indigenous land practices and culture would be of great benefit. Principles upon which to enter the space could be displayed at each entry to encourage people to act with responsibility toward the environment and other park users. Enshrined in a spirit of giving, this could include giving one’s full awareness to the impact of one’s visit as well as nature’s gift to us in its beauty and healing power. Composting at bbq areas, perhaps using “Bokashi” and “Shift” to break down all wastes, even from dogs, would eliminate plastics.
Darren Lewin-Hill, Rucker Ward, Darebin Council
If elected as a Rucker Ward Councillor, I will work to sustain our parks as places of recreation, and of connection with native flora and fauna – including birds (I'm a keen bird-watcher). Opposing the sale of open space, and supporting its expansion, I will fight the exploitation of parks by commercial and other activities detrimental to their habitat values. To protect the community and park ecologies, I will also work to establish a review of the use of herbicides by Council in parks and other green areas. My 'protecting open space' policy is available at www.lewin-hill.net/darebin08/
Ben Morgan, Cazaly Ward, Darebin Council
Firstly I would like to thank the Darebin Parklands Association for the opportunity to tour the Parklands on Monday night and see the issues raised first hand.
The most strikingly obvious observation that I noted on the tour is the need to preserve the unique environment of the parklands. Balancing the needs of all park users is paramount to ensure the ongoing viability and usability of the parklands. If elected, I would like to build upon the previous commitments made by the Darebin Council to the parklands. If elected, I would like to enhance the existing relationship between the Darebin Parklands Association and Darebin Council.
Finally I would like to say that I am most willing to keep an open mind on issues with regard to present park usage and usage into the future.
Trevor Poulton , Cazaly Ward, Darebin Council
I will do my utmost to ensure that any development respects the integrity of the ecological character of the parklands.
My environmental activism has been extensive including having successfully campaigned for the creation of the new Great Otway National Park.
In 2008, I developed an elegant plan for intervention by the Federal government in relation to the recreational shooting of native waterbirds. I attended in Canberra on 3/11/2008 with Laurie Levy of the Coalition Against Duck Shooting, Birds Australia and Animals Australia to present the proposal to the Federal Minister for Environment’s Office. The proposal has been endorsed by over 130 environment, animal welfare and political groups across Australia regarding the proposal. Endorsees include Darebin Parklands Association.

Jason Garufi, Hawdon Ward, Banyule Council
We are lucky to have the Darebin Parklands at our door step and if elected to Council I would work to make sure it is protected and improved.
The flora and fauna, the wetlands, the mulberry and olive trees all add to the unique and historic experiences for park users.
The park caters for many different activities and I believe it is important to have a dog off leash area, just as dog owners must respect the park and pick up after their pets. This should not be in an environmentally sensitive area of the park.
Conservation and environmental sustainability would be my priority.
Sandra Macneil, Hawdon Ward, Banyule Council
Darebin Parklands are a unique and beautiful asset with a long and interesting history. Preservation and improvement are essential and if elected to Banyule Council I would work with Darebin Council, Darebin Parklands Association and the Darebin Parklands Management Committee to this end.
The rich variety of the Darebin Parklands caters for a range of interests and activities all of which deserve consideration. Conservation and environmental sustainability are a priority, but the park also has the capacity to cater for many uses including a dog off leash area, of course, environmentally sensitive areas of the park must continue to be protected.
Jenny Mulholland, Griffin Ward, Banyule Council
The Darebin Parklands Association needs to be congratulated for having a vision many years ago for turning a tip site into a native bushland which encourages native animals to return to the Darebin Parklands.
The DPA can rely on my continued support for conservation and sustainability projects. This current year I allocated funding (via Sue Course and other DPA members) to the book on the history of the Darebin Parklands. I supported the increase of the Bushland Management Crew by two additional staff members to not only support the Darebin Parklands but all of our other parklands within this great City.
I also supported many other conservation projects across Griffin ward in this year’s budget including: Glenard Estate internal parks Management Plan; Outlook Estate internal parks Management; Plan Sills Bend Management Plan.
Nick Skerys, Beale Ward, Banyule Council
The Darebin
Parklands are a magnificent community resource and must be protected. If
elected I would value the opportunity to continue the fantastic work already
done over the decades to establish and improve this important environmental
resource.
There are many facets to this park that need protection and enhancement and we
are lucky to have a park to offer many different experiences for park
users.
The dog off leash area has been a major issue and I believe there should be
such an area, with resources for dog owners to clean up after their pets,
located in a less environmentally sensitive section of the park.
